Religion, Community, and Education.: The Case of Rural Bihar
Edited By Sanjeer Alam
Based on extensive fieldwork of 300 households and 700 schoolchildren in rural Bihar, Md Sanjeer Alam examines the impact of religious backgrounds of Hindus and Muslims on educational disparities. The book utilises spatially embedded historical trajectories to examine the educational development of the two communities. The author argues that religious communities have to be seen as spatially embedded rather than as homogeneous socio-cultural aggregates, to account for the manner in which spatial located-ness reflects varying and complicated patterns of socio-economic and educational outcomes.
